She started out as an amateur singer showcasing her powerful vocals in singing competitions around Manila and in different provinces all over the country. Then, Katrina Velarde became a member of Aka Jam, an all-girl vocal group that competed in the group division of X-Factor Philippines under the mentorship of Gary Valenciano.
Katrina’s popularity amongst music lovers was further bolstered through her online videos where she performed cover versions of her favorite songs using a purple comb as a makeshift microphone. Hence the moniker, “The Suklay Diva.”
Some of the videos that she posted online reached millions of views including her rendition of Beyonce’s “Dangerously In Love” and Kuh Ledesma’s “Til I Met You” as well as her outstanding interpretation of Ellie’s “Burn,” where she performed the song impersonating the vocal talents of such iconic performers as Shakira, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, and Celine Dion among many others.
Meanwhile, her live performance of Michael Bolton’s “Go The Distance” on Wish 103.5’s “Wish Bus” had a record breaking 4 million views on YouTube and music fans across the world reacted positively in unison with her superb vocals.
Now, the Katrina is currently promoting her already hits hit singles under Viva Records—“Lason Mong Halik” and “Taksil.” These two songs will be part of her show in Music Hall’s “Pop Variety Night.”
