Globe Telecom joined the United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s project that involves a treatment, storage and disposal facility for electronic waste in Malabon City.
This marks the telecom company’s first partnership with Integrated Recycling Industries Inc. and the local government unit of Malabon to establish the second TSD facility for e-waste in Barangay Dampalit.
“We need to work together to find ways to solve the problem of e-waste,” Rofil Magto, Globe climate action lead for sustainability and social responsibility, said in a virtual signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement on June 29.
Magto said joining the UNIDO initiative is an extension of Globe’s objective to help solve the e-waste problem. “To sustain our commitment, we are participating in this program because we know that one institution cannot solve this problem on e-waste alone,” he said.
In 2014, Globe launched a program called E-waste Zero to promote proper disposal and educate people about e-waste’s harmful effects on the environment.
“More than 1.4 million kilograms we safely recycled that came from our internal facilities and contributions of our external partners from different organizations—more than 66 organizations,” Magto said.
The new facility in Malabon is part of UNIDO’s project called “Implementation of PCB Management Programs for Electric Cooperatives and Safe E-Waste Management.”
The project aims to protect human health and the environment through sound management of polychlorinated biphenyl and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in e-waste.
The first TSD facility for e-waste was established last year in Barangay Bagong Silang, Caloocan City and became operational in November. Rushelle Intia
