Globe Telecom Inc. said Tuesday it expects a faster rollout of 5G technology in the Philippines, which has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to infrastructure.
Globe presidentand chief executive Ernest Cu said the difficulties in putting up cell sites in the past had affected the deployment of 5G. “I think we’re so far behind that it’s going to take some time. Given the fact that the country has a limited number of cell sites owing to its past history where it was very difficult to build cell sites,” he said.
Cu, however, said it is much easier to build now with the new laws that were crafted during the pandemic. Adding a new layer of technology on the same infrastructure and the same towers also helps Globe offload 4G LTE into 5G.
The Department of Public Works and Highways issued Department Order No. 29 lifting the ban on the construction of critical infrastructure particularly cell sites along national roads. This is another important win for the industry as telco players in the country ramp up infrastructure builds, according to Globe.
