Eton Properties sign agreement with ASEAN Center for Biodiversity

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and Lucio Tan-owned Eton Properties Philippines, Inc. recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed to manage protected areas near development sites.

The MoU focuses on conserving natural habitats and supporting local wildlife and plant species. The initiative also aims to enhance disaster resilience through nature-based solutions. It includes sharing data and research, as well as raising awareness and engaging local communities in biodiversity conservation.

During the signing ceremony, ACB executive director Dr. Theresa Mundita Lim emphasized the need to integrate biodiversity in key development sectors. She stated, “The role of the private sector, in particular—is crucial for the successful achievement of the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.” She added that businesses have knowledge and resources that impact biodiversity, making their decisions important in addressing biodiversity loss.

Eton Properties president and chief executive officer Kyle C. Tan called the signing a significant milestone.

“This partnership demonstrates our shared vision to build a sustainable future, where economic growth complements with the preservation of our natural ecosystems,” Tan said.

He noted that responsible development aligns with environmental stewardship.

Biodiversity loss affects the ASEAN economy, which relies on natural resources and is vulnerable to climate change. Healthy ecosystems can help mitigate these challenges. This reality urges businesses to include nature and biodiversity in their strategies.

In November 2023, the ACB launched the ASEAN Business and Biodiversity Initiative. This initiative aims to support ASEAN’s transition to a greener and sustainable future.
