Transmission network operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said Tuesday it launched its own central control and monitoring system as part of efforts to improve power transmission capabilities and bring the country closer to running on a smart grid.
“NGCP is pleased with this development as it works to keep pace with the rising standards of power utility practices around the globe, as part of its commitment to realize a smarter, more efficient power transmission grid,” the company said in a statement.
CCMS is a technology used to automate certain functions of the power transmission grid, especially in substations.
The system includes real-time monitoring software and hardware to be used for the acquisition, collection, centralized monitoring and analysis of power data and equipment condition.
NGCP said it would be able to remotely operate unmanned substations through the CCMS, thus improving the operational performance of transmission facilities.
NGCP’s Cagayan de Oro and Cebu substations will pilot the CCMS, with the company targeting to expand CCMS-enabled facilities to 21 substations around the country by 2025.
It said CCMS is part of the company’s commitment to introduce smart grid technology to the Philippines.
A smart grid incorporates modern hardware and digital software to intuitively and intelligently automate the functions of the power system which translates to improved grid security and information management, efficient integration of the connection between generators and load customers, effective response to the needs of the transmission network and greater reliability and quality of power transmitted by the grid.
NGCP said it continued its annual public consultation to present the 2021-2040 Transmission Development Plan to energy agencies and stakeholders from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao despite the ongoing pandemic.
“This exercise is meant to provide updates on NGCP’s grid improvement projects and get substantial feedback from our stakeholders before finalizing and submitting to the Department of Energy. Our stakeholders’ inputs are vital as we map out our priority projects to address the growing demand for power in the country. This will ensure that the plans of NGCP for the coming years are in sync with the needs of our power customers and the entire energy industry,” the company said.
NGCP is a Filipino-led, privately owned company in charge of operating, maintaining and developing the country’s power grid and is led by majority shareholders and vice chairman of the board Henry Sy Jr. and co-vice chairman Robert Coyiuto Jr.
