Rosegie Ramos secured her place in the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first Filipino weightlifter to do so and the seventh athlete from the Philippines to qualify.
The Philippine Olympic Committee proudly announced Ramos’s victory following her outstanding performance at the 2024 IWF World Cup, a crucial Olympic qualification event for weightlifting.
The 20-year-old Ramos dominated the women’s 49kg Group B category, clinching victory with a total lift of 190kg from her impressive lifts of 87kgs in snatch and 103kgs in the clean and jerk.
As the cousin of Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, Ramos adds another chapter to her family’s legacy of sporting excellence.
Ramos will join the ranks of other qualified Filipino athletes such as EJ Obiena, Carlos Yulo, Aleah Finnegan, Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio, and Aira Villegas in the edition that celebrates the 100 years of the Olympics.
A stalwart of the national team, Ramos has previously showcased her talent by winning gold medals at the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Asian Junior Championships, as well as securing a bronze medal at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games.
Other weightlifters set to compete in the World Cup include John Ceniza in men’s 61kg; Diaz and Elreen Ando in women’s 59kg; and Kristen Macrohon and Vanessa Sarno in women’s 71kg.
Diaz, the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and silver medalist in Rio in 2016, is aiming for her fourth appearance in the Olympics.
