Former Senator Panfilo Lacson called for a “political ceasefire” over the weekend among the nation’s top leaders and focus instead on addressing the pressing problems facing the country.
The seasoned politician issued the statement following the latest incendiary remarks made by Vice President Sara Duterte against President Ferdinand Marcos, First Lady Liza Marcos-Araneta, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez in a video conference.
Lacson said it is sad that the President and Vice President of the Philippines and their respective supporters are engaged in a word war, to the point that violent threats were made.
“Instead of having a word war among the camps involved, cooler heads must intervene. If they cannot reach an agreement, at least have a ceasefire. We have more serious problems to address,” Lacson said mostly in Tagalog in an interview on dwAR radio on Saturday.
The former senator, who is seeking a fresh mandate in the 2025 national elections, noted the country is still reeling from the effects of successive cyclones, and rising prices of goods as well as the weakening of the peso’s exchange rate.
For these reasons, he said the public must not feel entertained by the word war as it benefits no one.
“We should not feel entertained. These developments are sad and not good for our country,” Lacson stated.
