‘Exclude AFP newbies from pension inputs’

New members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) should be excluded from the proposed mandatory contribution for military and uniformed personnel (MUP), the Department of National Defense (DND) said Monday.

Senator Ronald dela Rosa relayed this for the DND during the Senate plenary deliberations on the department’s P233.27 billion proposed budget for 2024.

In defending the DND’s budget, Dela Rosa explained that the AFP has existing assets that could fund the pensions of new entrants, and active and retired military personnel, but this would only cover the AFP and not the other law enforcement agencies. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro earlier said President Marcos’ first marching order to him was to continue to reform the MUP pension system.
