Taguig recognized for nutrition programs

Taguig City emerged as the sole Nutrition Honor Awardee in Metro Manila, receiving a prestigious recognition for its exemplary

The city government also received another Certificate of Recognition for being the Best Local Government Unit (LGU) in implementing the
Philippine Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition Program.

The city’s services provided significant benefits to children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition. A referral system was established to help SAM patients access Inpatient Therapeutic Care at Taguig-Pateros District Hospital, followed by consistent referrals for rehabilitated children with SAM to city health centers for continuous management and monitoring.

Mayor Laarni Cayetano was also recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for the committee’s active participation, earning an impressive score in the 2023 Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation.

The committee’s unwavering support and implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition played a vital role in achieving this recognition.

Additionally, several individuals and groups received citations for their outstanding contributions to nutrition programs in the city: Ms.
Joann Espiritu RND – City Nutrition Program Coordinator, and President of City and District Nutrition Program Coordinators of Metro Manila Association Inc; Ms. Julita Bernabe – City Nutrition Action Officer, and Ms. Gina Reyes – Barangay Nutrition Scholar.

A contestant from Barangay Lower Bicutan, Emily Hintalan, garnered the 2nd Place Award in the Vlog Making Contest: “Healthy ang affordameals ng pamilya, kaya natin yarn!” held as part of the 2023 Nutrition Month celebration.

Notable nutrition programs in Taguig include the Barangay Weekly Breastmilk Letting and the Dietary Supplementation Program for nutritionally-at-risk pregnant and lactating mothers, with a focus on providing nutritious meals for infants aged 6 to 23 months and
priority children aged 24 to 59 months.

Collaborations with other city offices, such as the City Agriculture Office, have led to the organization of Urban Gardening Seminars,
which educate citizens on creating and maintaining community gardens. Participants receive free seeds to support urban gardening
initiatives, fostering food security in the community and aiding in the fight against malnutrition, particularly among children.
