Private firms urged to pay proper wages to workers on June 12

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reminded private sector employers to provide proper pay wages to workers who will report for work on June 12, a regular and special holiday in celebration of the country’s 125th Anniversary of Independence Day.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido  Laguesma issued Labor Advisory No. 13, Series of 2023, stipulating the proper computation of workers’ wages for the declared regular holiday on June 12.

“If the employees did not work, they shall be paid 100 percent of their wage for that day, provided they worked or were on leave of absence with pay on the day immediately preceding the regular holiday. The computation is basic wage x 100 percent,” he said.

When the day immediately preceding the regular holiday is a non-working day in the establishment or the scheduled rest day of the employees, they shall be entitled to holiday pay if they worked or were on leave of absence with pay on the day immediately preceding the non-working day or rest day.

Meanwhile, for work done during the regular holiday, employees shall be paid 200 percent of their wage for the first eight hours.

`If the employees worked on a regular holiday that also falls on their rest day, they shall be paid an additional 30 percent of the basic wage of 200 percent. The computation is basic wage x 200 percent x 130 percent.

For overtime work on a regular holiday that also falls on the employees’ rest day, they shall be paid an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate on the said day (hourly rate of the basic wage x 200 percent x 130 percent x 130 percent x number of hours worked).
