The Philippines claimed a silver and five bronze medals on Day 1 of the 1st Malaysian Fencing Federation Minime International Tournament at the Arena Tan Sri Hamzah gymnasium inside the Olympic Council Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
Canlas Fencing bet Jodie Danielle Tan dropped a closely-fought contest with Hong Kong’s Fong Chi Yau in the finals of the 12-under girls’ foil action.
Fong made it to finals after she slipped past another Filipina bet, Victoria Ebdane, 10-1, in the semifinals.
Ebdane, who eased out Willia Liana Galvez, 10-3, in the round of 16, went on to claim the bronze medal, after reaching the quarterfinals and beating Liu Yihan, 10-0, in the fight for a semis seat.
Jade Uy settled for the bronze medal in the 8-under girls’ foil, while Elijah Timbol also finished in third place in the under-10 boys’ foil.
Cousins Samantha Canlas and Nicol also brought home a bronze medal each in the under-10 girls’ foil and under-12 girls’ sabre.
The event is organized by the Malaysia Fencing Federation, led by its president Rusni Abu Hassan.
Tan and Ebdane are recent winners in the Thailand Fencing Federation meet.
