Volley star Valdez recovers from dengue, swollen liver

Top lady spiker Alyssa Valdez missed her team’s campaign in the recent Asian Volleyball Confederation Cup for Women due to dengue, but most people were not aware of how serious her battle was against the dreaded disease.

In her most recent post on Facebook, the Creamline frontliner divulged that she contracted a severe case of dengue and her condition reached the point of suffering from bleeding and a swollen liver.

“The first few days were so bad—(I) had a high fever, body pain, and headache. I wasn’t able to eat and drink anything,” said Valdez.

“After six days, thankfully my fever went down, but my platelet count continued to drop dangerously to 37. I then experienced some complications like bleeding and a swollen liver.”

She said that the doctors decided to admit her to the hospital with the big possibility of putting her on blood transfusion.

“My first few hours in the hospital were very crucial,” she said.

After several laboratory tests, her doctors ruled out blood transfusion, but she had to be confined at the hospital.

“Thank God, everything slowly got better! I’ll also have my last few lab tests soon, too. I am on the road to a full recovery. Thank you for all the prayers,” she added.

Aside from missing the AVC where her team, the Creamline Cools Smashers, played impressively against highly regarded teams, she also missed a business trip to Germany.

She will be joining the team’s trip to Thailand to provide moral support as Creamline represents the Philippines in the ASEAN Grand Prix set on Sept. 9 to 11.

Meanwhile, her middle blocker teammate Risa Sato is set to rejoin the Creamline squad after also missing the AVC Women’s Cup due to an undisclosed medical issue.

In the absence of Valdez and Sato during the AVC, Creamline relied on Tots Carlos, Jema Galanza, Jia de Guzman, Ced Domingo, and Michele Gumabao to finish sixth in the nine-country tournament and provide the Philippines’ best finish in the Asian-level tournament in 39 years.

In Thailand, the Cool Smashers will be up against Southeast Asia’s top-notch teams, host Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
