First impressions count. Yes, they matter, especially if you want to make an indelible mark in Philippine Tinsel Town.
Yohan Castro, the man of twenty-five summers, armed with his boyish looks, a winsome smile, and genteel manner, is the silver crooner on the rise who passes the first impression test, with flying colors.
The former special education teacher is a proud “offspring” of Euterpe, the Greek muse of music, with 11 years of experience as a professional singer.
The former Protégé contender shares what sets him apart: “I think it is my being a teacher. You know, even if the calling to be a full-time singer is that strong, finishing a college degree is most important to me. Not just because it will be a fallback, but because I owe it to my parents. I wanted to give them that proud moment na naitaguyod nila ang anak nila.”
“I understand that some artists chose to have their singing careers as a priority, and whatever their reasons are, they are definitely valid,” Castro carries on. “Sa akin lang, mas gusto ko munang makatapos talaga before I face another challenge and explore the opportunities that showbiz offers.”
Ballads are the types of songs he interprets with the most. Ronnie Liang, Gino Padilla, Erik Santos, and Martin Nievera are his favorite balladeers. Broadway and musical theater anthems also fascinate him. Inspirational songs, he digs a lot.
“When I see the people smiling when I do a song,” he says alluding to the best experience he gets out of performing.
“You know, I have been blessed to receive comments that my manner of singing tells the story of the song that Iperform and that I sing with my heart filled with emotions.”
Castro considers collaborating with other artists the most challenging part of being a singer.
“It takes a lot of preparation, time, and effort. The song choice is crucial. And sometimes, moods and feelings get in the way. Behavioral problems are normal and they cannot be avoided. But because of my background as an educator, having taught kids with special needs, patience is truly one of my biggest virtues.”
He looks forward to singing an original song, something that most singers always dream about.
“It’s a bonus to hear people sing and support it, and make it as one of their favorites. That becoming a reality, for me is more than wonderful. Right now, I am in the process of planning an album that will contain songs that will always be in the hearts and memories of many people.”
Apart from singing, acting is also one part of the showbiz industry that Castro wishes to do. He lists young actresses Barbie Forteza and Kathryn Bernardo as his dream onscreen partners.
