Filipinas hope to shake off rust

There’s a bit of rust, but the Philippine national women’s football team is working to get it out of their system.

Filipinas’ coach Allen Stajcic said this as the team continued to prepare for the 2022 Southeast Asian Games in Sydney Australia.

The Philippines prevailed over Fiji, 7-2, in a friendly last Thursday in wet conditions at the Western Sydney Wanderers field in Sydney, Australia.

“There were some good patches, some good moments, but we were a bit rusty in some parts just because players were out for two months, not training in a team environment. Overall, it’s a good starting point for us,” said Stajcic.

In that game, skipper Tahnai Annis scored a brace (two goals), with Quinley Quezada and Anicka Castañeda.

“We were a bit rusty on the ball as the match wore on. That’s just a result of a couple of months out and just four to five days of training,” added Stajcic.

“It was a tough match in tough conditions. I’m happy for the team for the good result. We’ll keep working hard,” said team manager Jefferson Cheng.

The Filipinas have another friendly with Fiji on Monday and will play three more friendlies before heading to another two weeks of training camp.
