JAMIE Christine Lim showed she was her truly father’s daughter by winning the gold medal in the women’s +61kg kumite in the 30th Southeast Asian Games karatedo Monday, December 12 at the World Trade Center.
The daughter of PBA legend Samboy Lim scored a decisive hit on Georgia Zefanya Ceyco of Indonesia during the last 20 seconds of the match to snatch the 2-1 victory.
Earlier, Lim beat Aurdrey Japyus of Malaysia, 7-3, in the quarterfinals before posting a dominant 5-1 victory over Thi Thao Bui of Vietnam in the semis.
Junna Tsukii grabbed the first gold for the country’s karatekas when she won the title in women’s -50 kg kumite.
The men salvaged two bronze medals in their weight classes.
Ivan Christopher Agustin blasted Htet Zaw Min of Myanmar, 11-4, to take the bronze in men’s -75 kg kumite.
Agustin scrambled past Virak Sreang of Cambodia, 2-1, in the quarters. But he was outpointed 8-9 by Songvut Muntaen of Thailand in the semis.
Sharief Afif won the bronze medal in men’s +75 kumite after dominating Visol Sreang, 5-0.
Afif seemed headed to a gold medal after an 8-0 shutout of Sim Chung Hiang of Brunei in the quarterfinals. But he was outpointed by the tall and lanky Thanh Nhan Do of Vietnam, 5-3, in the semifinals.
It has turned out to be a banner year for Lim.
She graduated summa cum laude in BS Mathematics at UP Diliman and followed it up with the SEAG gold medal.
She offered the gold medal to her dad who was named as one of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 25 Greatest Players.
