Solon resigns as NUP chief out of ‘delicadeza’ over Speaker bid

Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro, the former House majority leader in the 17th Congress, on Sunday said he has resigned as the National Unity Party president and even as its member over his failure to back the speakership of Taguig City-Pateros Rep. Allan Peter Cayetano.

Castro said that he resigned out of delicadeza, since it was the only proper thing to do when he did not support the party’s choice.

Castro had openly displayed his support for Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, now the House majority leader,

“I resigned out of delicadeza since I was open and unwaveringly frontliner for Congressman Martin Romualdez,” he said.

The NUP leadership led by its chairman Ronaldo Puno had endorsed Cayetano as its Speaker.

Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Mike Defensor lauded Castro for his statesmanly act and his display of delicadeza.

“His [Castro] character is rare and uncommon among the new crop of political leaders nowadays as shown by those turncoats and abandon after the Speakership race,” he said.
