Do you still remember the band named The Aga Muhlach Experience? I don’t know where they are now. No recollection if they were one of the better bands during the late ‘90s and how long their reign was. Not even remembering a song from them that became part of Pinoy pop rock history.
The name of group came to mind when I graced the premiere of Aga Muhlach ’s new film, Paul Soriano’s First Love, opposite Bea Alonzo.
First love, yes, for the people born under the demographic labeled as Generation X, for the majority of us, Muhlach was our first showbiz guy love. In the Maryo Delos Reyes’ coming-of-age film Bagets, it propelled him to instant matinee idol status.
On screen, with Herbert Bautista as constant comrade, you cannot forget those puppy dog eyes, the killer dimples and smile, that penchant for conversational English, the middle-class persona and of course, the scene where he jumped in the swimming pool wearing only his tidy white underwear, became legendary.
A confession, if there was one guy I had the longest relationship with, it is definitely the one with Ariel, his real name. And the reason why we lasted, he does not even know me from Adam or Steve, and he is not aware that I am alive.
For the millennial who only knew Aga through his judging stint in Boyband PH, your required viewing, to savor and realize why we are still truly, madly and deeply in love with Mr. Muhlach, is May Minahal, which also stars his one time, big time girlfriend, Aiko Melendez. Another necessary popcorn flick to watch was his team up with Regine Velasquez, Pangako Ikaw Lang. And finally, Sana’y Maulit Muli, with Lea Salonga.
We are most aware now that Aga acknowledged that Salonga was his “the one who got away” lady love.
Sana’y Maulit Muli, since 1995 up to its restored version, continues to bring the magic and hope for your one true love and that distance and hardship are not enough to dissipate and destroy the love you feel if he or she is your “the one.”
Clamor and yearning for a reunion movie has not stop and continues to burn. Do we get to see Aga and Lea on screen again? Soon, we hope, keeping all the body parts we can cross.
For now, let us be content with his first team up with Bea. From what I watched, Aga did not disappoint. Despite the obvious heft and his experimentation with facial hair, his eyes still convey a young boy playfulness, that special look of love he gives his leading lady and yes, in this Soriano directed motion picture, there is a fresh emotional maturity that he brings and gives Nick.
First Love, graded B by the Cinema Evaluation Board, is showing in cinemas nationwide.
