President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday he wanted to give Filipinos a respite from corruption by firing more people.
“There will be more dismissals to come. And I don’t care if… my whole term would be characterized by a firing and dismissal of people from government,” Duterte said in a speech during the 81st anniversary of the Government Service Insurance System in Pasay City.
In recent months, Duterte has sacked several Cabinet members and top government officials over alleged corrupt practices.
These included Ismael Sueno of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the chairman of the Commission on Higher Education Patricia Licuanan, and the chief of the Maritime Industry Authority Marcial Amaro III.
His close allies, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo were the latest high-ranking Cabinet officials who resigned due to corruption allegations.
