THE Philippines’ top pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena is getting ready to start training again for the coming indoor and outdoor athletics’ season.
Obiena said this after he was cleared following a consultation with Dr. Alessandro Napoli on his lower back injury.
“Some exciting news I want to share with you all. I’m officially cleared by @dr_alessandro.napoli and have fully recovered from my lower back injury. Thank you to everyone who supported me during this journey,” said Obiena in a statement on social media.
Obiena needed two months of rest following his stint in the Paris Olympics. He hurt his back while getting ready to compete 12 days before the games.
During his hiatus, Obiena spent time with his family, loved ones and friends in Manila and raised P1.5 million to build to pole vaulting pits.
Light workouts helped him get in shape during his weeks of resting.
“I have been MIA here because I have been focusing myself on getting back into shape and be ready by January! Here’s to the start of 2025 season!!!” said Obiena in his Facebook post.
His coach Vitaly Petrov will be around when that happens as Asia’s no. 1 pole vaulter prepares for the indoor season this January.
The outdoor season comes next in March and the World Championships in September.
In the World Championships, Obiena’s fitness will determine his readiness for more pole vault battles.
