A sleepy island town becomes the backdrop for a dark comedy about greed, crime, and chaos in murder mystery Greedy People, starring Himesh Patel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Lily James. The film is directed by Potsy Ponciroli.
The story follows rogue local cop Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his rookie partner, Will (Himesh Patel), in the small town of Providence. Terry, who claims that not much ever happens in the town, is proven wrong when the duo stumbles upon a million dollars at a crime scene of their own making. As they attempt to keep the money for themselves, their actions set off a series of events that spiral out of control. Soon, the town’s power-hungry residents—including Will’s pregnant wife (Lily James), a masseur (Simon Rex), and a local seafood magnate (Tim Blake Nelson) — are caught up in the race for cash, revealing just how far they are willing to go for the almighty dollar.
Patel, reflecting on the film’s layered twists, described Greedy People as “brilliant,” adding that the story logically builds upon each character’s mistakes.
“Each mistake led to the next, and Will finds himself cornered with no way out. His and Paige’s [Lily James’ character] decisions pile up, leading to a truly shocking climax,” Patel said. “It makes for a thrilling ending.”
The film explores the power of greed, with Patel noting how the temptation of money can lead good people astray, especially under the stress of difficult circumstances.
“You really should stop and take a minute, if you’re confronted by a fork in the road,” he said. “This movie is a thrill ride—you don’t know where it’s going to go… and I hope people enjoy that.”
Greedy People premiered on Nov. 22 and is available for streaming on Lionsgate Play, exclusively via PLDT Home and Smart.
