Check out the Benefits of Offering Natural Snacks to Your Pet

Having a balanced and as natural as possible diet is the best option not only for humans but also for pets. In their diet, in addition to feeding them with commercial pet food, there is the possibility of including meals with natural foods that also contribute to their well-being.

From fruits to healthy carbohydrates, the possibilities are varied, but it's important to understand the differences between these alternatives and know how to moderate the offerings to your furry friends. Thiago Teixeira, the general director of Nouvet, an excellence veterinary center in São Paulo, explains that while traditional pet food consists of dry kibble, natural food consists of entirely natural meals, such as vegetables, meats, and grains.

For pet owners who don't opt for a completely natural diet, offering natural foods in the form of snacks is a viable option. "Providing natural foods also contributes to a balanced diet, always considering the specific needs of each pet. This practice is even encouraged, as it can bring nutritional benefits as well as improve the pet's well-being and longevity," he comments.

Steam-cooked foods that are free of preservatives or chemical additives have become viable options for families and veterinary centers. Nouvet has partnered with A Quinta, a company that provides 100% natural steam-cooked dog food that does not require refrigeration. This ensures the correct nutritional balance for pets. The company supplies these products to pets in their care and those attending the Nouvet school.

In addition to acquiring natural products from reputable companies, it's important for families to understand which foods available at home are actually safe for pets. With that in mind, Thiago Teixeira lists some foods that can be given to pets. Here are some options:

Fruits

Rich in vitamins, fiber, and water, fruits are usually well-received by dogs and cats. Apples, pears, and bananas are the main options. In addition to offering them in small pieces, a good way to provide this type of natural treat is to make popsicles in warmer weather. You just need to mix the fruit with water, put it in molds, freeze it, and give it to your pet. This way, your pet can enjoy a healthy treat while staying hydrated and entertained with licks.

Most fruits are allowed, but some have restrictions, like grapes, which should be avoided as they contain substances that are toxic to pets.

Vegetables and greens

As foods rich in fiber and antioxidants and with less sugar, vegetables and greens are also welcomed as snacks. Some excellent vegetables for pets include raw carrots, which help with teeth cleaning, and zucchini, which, when properly cleaned, raw, and with the skin, can contribute to vision and skin health.

In the category of greens, lettuce is recommended, as it is a source of calcium and vitamin A, in addition to supporting bone health and intestinal health.

Healthy carbohydrates

Many pets, especially dogs, tend to beg for food from the family's table during meals. Even though they are not snacks, it's important to know which types of carbohydrates are allowed for them to consume. Always consider well-cooked and unseasoned options. Grains like whole-grain rice, oats, and quinoa provide nutrients and energy. Baked or boiled potatoes without seasoning are also a good option, providing B vitamins, vitamin K, phosphorus, and potassium.

"Every food should be given to pets in moderation, and, more importantly, always based on the guidance of a veterinarian. Before offering different foods, consult with a professional to understand the contraindications and specific needs of each pet. Also, make sure to find out if your furry friend has any allergies or sensitivities to certain foods," adds the director of Nouvet.
