President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's unprecedented move marks a historic shift towards recognizing the invaluable role of animals within governmental settings.

19 Cats from the National Palace to be Provided for Life

In a historic move, Mexican authorities have designated 19 cats residing at the presidential National Palace as "living permanent assets," ensuring that they will receive food and care for the entirety of their lives. This groundbreaking decision marks the first instance in the country's history where animals have been accorded permanent asset status, a designation typically reserved for buildings or furniture.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador personally included the feline residents in this unique category, recognizing their significance as symbolic figures within the National Palace. Adriana Castillo Roman, director of the National Palace and the Cultural Heritage Service, emphasized the integral role that the cats play in the palace's identity, noting that they have unrestricted access to all areas of the historic building, including attending meetings, interviews, and even making appearances in front of cameras.

Among the distinguished feline residents, some have been given names that pay homage to renowned artists, adding an extra layer of significance to their presence. One such cat, named after the iconic musician David Bowie, commemorates the artist's visit to the palace in 1997, during which he met with the celebrated painter Diego Rivera. Another cat, affectionately known as Zeus, gained notoriety for making a memorable appearance at the president's press briefing, charming reporters and onlookers alike with his presence.

The decision to formally recognize and care for these palace cats underscores a shift towards a more inclusive and compassionate approach to animal welfare within governmental settings. By extending protection and support to these cherished feline companions, the National Palace sets a meaningful example of valuing the well-being and contributions of all living beings, regardless of their species.

As these cats continue to roam the halls of the National Palace, serving as both beloved companions and honored residents, their presence serves as a touching reminder of the enduring bond between humans and animals, as well as a testament to the power of recognizing and celebrating the unique roles that animals play in our lives and collective history.
