Newly-appointed Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Don Artes on Saturday led the launching of the “Brigada Eskwela” program.
The event, with the theme “Bayanihan Para Sa Matatag na Paaralan,” took place at the Commonwealth Elementary School and Bagong Silangan High School in preparation for the upcoming school year.
Artes stated that the consistent involvement of the MMDA in the program demonstrates the agency’s dedication and commitment to enhancing school facilities and creating better learning environments for students.
“The MMDA is delighted to engage in this kind of program. For us, this activity is not just about cleaning or repairing the classrooms; it is our way of promoting unity and making a contribution in improving the quality of education and providing a better and safer environment,” Artes said.
“Participating in the Brigada Eskwela program is also our chance to foster the spirit of volunteerism or “bayanihan” by working together to build a stronger and more resilient center of learning,” he added.
Artes also expressed his support for Angara, acknowledging his advocacy for education, health, and social welfare.
Angara, in turn, committed to prioritizing educational reforms that aim to enhance the quality of learning outcomes.
“I might feel pressured but as part of my commitment to improving the Philippine education system, I believe that through our collaborative efforts, we can ensure that we are creating a school environment that is safe, clean, and conducive to development and growth. I assure all of you that I will do my very best to prioritize educational reforms that promote quality learning outcomes,” Angara said.
The MMDA personnel from different offices conducted various activities such as declogging drainages, painting school facades, tree trimming, painting pedestrian lanes, anti-dengue operations, cleaning, roof gutter declogging, and repair of furniture and fixtures. They also put up no smoking and no vaping signage in schools.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte expressed gratitude to MMDA for its support in refurbishing the institutions and for coordinating with the city on various projects and programs.
The Brigada Eskwela program, initiated by DepEd, is a nationwide activity aimed at promoting “Bayanihan” in the community to create conducive learning environments for students.
