In February, amidst the changing seasons, the annual mating dance begins for the diverse inhabitants of Samara Zoo. However, not all have found a compatible partner, and some struggles with temperamental differences.

Established Couples

As winter draws to a close, foxes typically take center stage in the realm of procreation. They fill the air with loud howls and barks, signaling their readiness for love. Yet this year, an unusual calm settled over the Samara Zoo.

"Our foxes have aged, suggesting that we may not see offspring this year," shares zookeeper Alena Kireeva with KP-Samara. "While the wolf pair managed to embrace a romantic mood, despite the significant age gap between the Alpha male and his lady. Typhoon, the young, lively wolf, playfully advances towards Alpha, who responds cautiously but does not dismiss his overtures. Moments of intrigue abound, offering hope for a new generation in this duo."

Raccoons discreetly navigate their mating season without drawing attention. Meanwhile, the emu birds have concluded their courtship, though no chicks have yet emerged from their eggs.

Tigers: Creatures of Passion

Cactus and Cassandra, the inseparable tiger companions, continue to nurture their bond with tenderness. Although tigers exhibit seasonal mating patterns in the wild, the zoo setting allows for year-round expressions of intimacy among tiger pairs.

Similar to Typhoon and Alpha, the tigers also differ in age. However, in this feline coupling, the lady Cassandra's youthful exuberance often outshines the older Cactus. Displaying playful behavior reminiscent of a domestic cat, Cassandra reclines submissively, exposing her belly, and playfully frolics around Cactus. She affectionately rubs against him and emits soft purrs, seeking his affection.

Carlusha's Solitary Egg-laying

Amidst the amorous displays of the zoo's inhabitants, the parrot couples exhibit a perpetual devotion, laying eggs throughout the year. Notably, Carlusha, a vibrant macaw parrot, remained single for a decade.

"She redirected her unrequited affections towards the zoo guests, engaging in playful flirtations with everyone," Alena explains. "Perhaps a realization akin to 'time is ticking' struck her recently, prompting Carlusha to commence egg-laying. While lacking a mate, we do not anticipate hatching chicks, although nature occasionally witnesses reproduction in the absence of fertilization. Maybe Carlos, a prospective partner, holds the key to her future happiness."
