Detained overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso may serve the rest of her prison sentence in the Philippines as Indonesia, under incumbent President Prabowo Subianto, is crafting a new policy that would resolve its issues involving foreign inmates.
This is according to Philippine Ambassador Gina Alagon Jamoralin who met with Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration and Correction Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra last November 11.
Yusril said Indonesia is open to prisoner transfer arrangements while maintaining its legal sovereignty. He said this proposal has been discussed with President Prabowo and steps are ongoing to formulate a bilateral policy.
Veloso has been under the custody of Indonesia after she was arrested and eventually convicted on drug trafficking charges in 2010.
