Air Force probing transport aircraft mishap in Batanes

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) said it is investigating the incident involving a C-295 transport aircraft that skidded off the runway after its nose landing gear detached while landing at the Basco Airport in Batanes province on Friday afternoon.

“On or about 3 p.m., Nov. 1, 2024, a C-295 aircraft of the PAF on an HADR (humanitarian assistance disaster relief) mission carrying essential relief supplies encountered an incident while landing in Basco Airport, Basco, Batanes,” PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo said in a statement late Friday.

An investigation is ongoing and nothing is conclusive as to the cause of the incident, Castillo said, noting that the aircraft’s pilots and crew are safe.

She assured that despite the mishap, the Air Force will continue its relief operations in Batanes and other areas severely affected by recent weather disturbances.

“The PAF assures the public that despite this incident, our commitment and selfless duty to conduct rescue and relief operations in Batanes and all other typhoon-affected areas will continue by all other means,” Castillo said.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) likewise assured that essential supplies would be transported to affected communities despite the incident.

The C-295, with Tail No. 217, was carrying family food packs for the Office of Civil Defense.
