BUREAU of Immigration (BI) operatives have arrested a Nigerian national wanted in the US for cybercrimes that victimized Americans, mostly retired soldiers.
Ahmed Kamilu Alex was collared along Panay Ave., in Bgy. Paligsahan, Quezon City by agents from the BI’s fugitive search unit.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the Nigerian was nabbed on the strength of a mission order he issued at the request of the US government which sought the African’s deportation to the US so he could stand trial for his crimes.
Alex has been on the BI’s wanted list since August this year when he was placed in the immigration blacklist for being a fugitive from justice.
US authorities said Alex conspired with two other accomplices in perpetrating a cyber fraud scheme by creating bogus websites that mimicked legitimate US government agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through the bogus websites, the crime ring managed to charge their unsuspecting victims, mostly military personnel, US500 to US$48,500 purportedly as payment for processing their emergency leave requests.
“He will remain in our immigration blacklist and banned from re-entering the Philippines after he is deported,” Viado said.
Meanwhile, Viado lauded at least 32 immigration officers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for their dedication during Bagyong Kristine, extending their shifts to ensure the continuity of essential services despite the adverse weather conditions.
The officers’ commitment played a crucial role in maintaining smooth airport operations amid heavy rains and flooding disrupted flights.
“Our officers displayed remarkable commitment during Bagyong Kristine, prioritizing the welfare of travelers despite the risks. Their actions embody the spirit of public service and resilience,” he said.
