Diaz misses bronze by 3 kgs, but formalizes qualification to Olympics

Hidilyn Diaz missed the bronze medal by three kilograms in the women’s 55kg category of the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, but her participation formalized her entry into the 2020+1 Tokyo Olympics.

The 30-year-old Diaz dropped to her knees when she made an attempt at 121 kgs in the clean and jerk.

Because of this, the 118-kg lift she did earlier counted, and with 94 kgs in the snatch, Diaz totalled 212 kgs to settle for fourth place behind two Asian record holders from China.

Li Quiyun came 5 kgs short of the Asian record that she established in the 2019 World Championships with her total lift of 222 kgs for the gold.

Li also missed by 5 kgs the lift that she set back in the 2019 meet in the clean and jerk with her 124-kg effort.

Li Yajun, the current recordholder in the snatch, earned the silver with her 221 tally. Yajun,  who owns the snatch record at 102, cleared 99 kgs.

With her participation, Diaz, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist, formalized her entry to the Tokyo Olympics.

Regardless of her result in Tashkent, Diaz's entry  in the Asian weightlifting meet will give her a fourth straight Olympic stint.

This is because Diaz has now completed the International Weightlifting Federation's requirement of competing in five tournaments to make it to Tokyo.

Diaz is currently ranked no. 5 in the IWF rankings in the women's 55 kilogram.

This allows Diaz to join boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena and gymnast Carlos Yulo to Tokyo.

In the  first event, Hou Zhihui of China broke the world record of 96 kgs in the snatch.

And so did, India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who set a new world record with 119 kgs in the clean and jerk.
