‘House failed to act on raps vs. AJ Leonen’

The Filipino League of Advocates for Good Government on Tuesday bewailed the failure of the House of Representatives to immediately act on the impeachment complaint filed against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen for alleged culpable violation of the 1987 Constitution and betrayal of public trust

Edwin Cordevilla, FLAGG secretary general, lamented that the inaction by the House leadership on the impeachment complaint against Justice Leonen may only show that they are protecting the magistrates

“It is with great dismay we look at the House of Representatives now, supposedly the very house that houses the representatives of our people’s desires and aspirations to make things which matter to the nation a reality,” Cordevilla said in a statement.

“In our search for justice, we marched into the very halls of Congress in December 2020 to file an impeachment case that was found sufficient in form by the House Secretary General himself.”

In December last year, Cordevilla filed a verified impeachment complaint against Leonen on the grounds of culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust.

“We have painstakingly built up the case to prove and show that Justice Leonen is indeed needed to be removed without delay, via a sacred right enshrined in the Constitution,” he said.

“The House of Representatives, tasked to hear the case however, prefers to play dumb and chooses to take cover behind some alien mathematics. For, strangely, nobody among them seems to know how to correctly count their session days. The inaction of the House echoes the very attitude we find contemptible in Justice Leonen.”

“Is it with logical basis to presume that some of our honorable congressmen are protecting Justice Leonen… from the truth?”

In his complaint, Cordevilla accused Leonen of committing culpable violation of the Constitution for supposedly failing to dispose of at least 37 cases within 24 months.

This, he said, was in violation of Section 16, Article III of the Constitution which mandates the speedy disposition of cases.
