Agency investigates removal of squatters in Angeles City

The Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor has stepped into the demolition of over 20 families in Barangay Margot in Angeles City.

“Now that we are still in the pandemic, we would like to ask that no demolition take place if it is not covered by our Commission. We will make sure that the eviction is fair and no one will be aggravated,” chairman and chief executive Alvin Feliciano said.

The affected families are now staying in a covered court.

PCUP is determining if the demolition was done in a proper process anchored on the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992 or Republic Act Republic Act No. 7279.

“Instead of assisting those who are affected by the (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, we are still abusing this time to carry out the demolition. The commission is waiting and taking steps to finally resolve it,” Feliciano said.

The involved families claimed their water and power connections had been cut off without any notice.

The PCUP vowed to look into the matter and identify other similarly situated areas in Pampanga so that it could provide “full attention and appropriate legal action” on the evicted residents.

“The commission is open to any report that may be sent to them regarding such incidents,” Feliciano said.
