BACOLOD CITY—At least nine roads and bridges in the cities of Silay and Talisay were either destroyed or damaged by the flooding that submerged several localities in northern Negros Occidental over the weekend.
A list of the affected infrastructures was included in the situational report of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division on Monday.
In Talisay, a riprap in Barangay Zone 3 and the Pala-Pala Road in Purok Sigay of the same village collapsed. The road was rendered impassable for vehicles.
The damage to portions of the roads was shown in photos posted by the Talisay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office on Facebook.
At noon on Monday, the damaged Bangga Dose Bridge going to neighboring Silay was closed to vehicles.
In Silay, Barangay Bagtic’s Hacienda Mariano Bridge was destroyed and became impassable while the Hacienda Bagacay Bridge was damaged.
Barangay Guimbala-on’s Sangay Bridge was rendered partially impassable and its road barrier was damaged due to a landslide. Ripraps along Magikland to Sitio Cubay road were also destroyed.
The Sitio Marka Road was left partially impassable due to a landslide.
In Barangay E. Lopez, the Hacienda Napilas 2 Bridge going to Hacienda Violeta was damaged and became impassable while the Hacienda Gaston hanging bridge was washed out.
The Malisbog Bridge was damaged and was passable only to light vehicles, while the Barangays Patag-Hawaiian Hanging Bridge 2 was also washed out.
In a Facebook post, Board Member Ryan Gamboa, president of the Philippine Councilors League-Negros Occidental, said residents of the Malisbog-Sitio Pulo area had to make an improvised zip line to cross the other side of the river, and send food and other relief goods to the affected residents.
The floods brought by hours of rain on Friday night also left two people dead and affected over 13,500 families in eight localities in northern Negros.
The body of Marvito Lumandog, 43, was found on Saturday morning in Hacienda San German, Barangay Guimbala-on in Silay.
On Sunday afternoon, the remains of Ulyses Escamilla, 50, was recovered in a creek in Purok Santan, Barangay Zone 11 in Talisay.
The floods last weekend struck northern Negros only a week after flash floods hit the same area on New Year’s Day, leaving one dead, and hundreds of houses damaged or destroyed and displacing some 15,000 families.
