DFA wraps up probe on envoy Mauro

The Department of Foreign Affairs will soon wrap up its administrative investigation of the country’s envoy to Brazil, who has been accused of maltreating her Filipina helper, and will transmit its findings and recommendation to Malacanang for review.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Monday said the DFA’s fact-finding panel is expected to come up its formal investigation report on the case involving former Philippine Ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro, who had been recalled from her post after the scandalous incident was widely publicized in the media.

“The hearing panel will submit its formal investigation report and recommendations to the Board of Foreign Service Administration following Republic Act 7517, (or) the Foreign Service Act of 1991,” Locsin said, in an interview with CNN Philippines.

“We hope to have the decision very soon… They will send it to Malacañang before the yearend,” Locsin added.

Mauro’s alleged maltreatment of her 51-year old domestic staff, which was caught on video, were reported in the Brazilian media in November.

Locsin earlier vowed that the DFA response on the issue will be “severe to the fullest extent of the law.”

The DFA chief stressed that appropriate charges will be filed against Mauro if the DFA’s probe body finds sufficient basis to hold her administrative liable for the maltreatment of her staff.
