Dubbed the “Beast of Dufftown,” Mortlach single malt whisky’s dark and complex flavors are the result of an enigmatic distillation process called “The Way” developed by Dr. Alexander Cowie.
Mortlach is distilled exactly 2.81 times—0.81 times more than the Scotch tradition—in six copper stills of completely different shapes. A closely guarded secret handed down through generations of Mortlach distillers, the brand says this process unleashes the most primal essence of Scottish water and malt.
It comes in three variants: 12 Years Old (deep amber in color, with a nose that’s incredibly rich and deep, immediately warming to tasty oak tones similar to warm wood shavings), 16 Years Old (deep amber color, a rich and deep nose, and opens up to the scent of stewed black and orchard fruits, with earthy notes, spice, and honeyed sweetness), and 20 Years Old (old copper in color, with earthy notes and a meaty element, and delivers the smell of varnish, leather oil, wood resin, and an added oiliness only present in mature whiskies).
