Employers seek longer furlough

Employers are seeking an extension of the six-month furlough allowed by government for employees of companies that temporarily shut down operations amid the pandemic.

The Employers Association of the Philippines said the issue was discussed during a recent meeting at National Tripartite Industrial Peace Council.

“Employers are still discussing how the extension should be. There are many sectors that are yet to open and those that are partly operating are at loss on how they could manage business at this juncture,” said ECOP president Sergio Ortiz-Luis.

He said the Department of Labor and Employment previously allowed up to six months of floating status for employees of companies that shut down operations or were affected by downsizing operations.

The ECOP said it was waiting for the DOLE to release an announcement on their request.
