Meralco provides relief to customers

Power retailer Manila Electric Co. said Monday it agreed to provide power rate discount amounting to P101 million as relief to 2.77 million lifeline customers to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Meralco president Ray Espinosa said the company would extend the discount to lifeline customers or those with a monthly consumption of 100 kilowatt-hours and below.

“In response to the suggestion of Speaker Allan Peter Cayetano, we are giving relief or ‘ayuda’ to them equivalent to a total of P101 million from our distribution charge,” Espinosa said during the House of Representative hearing on the increase in electricity bills and power interruptions during the enhanced community quarantine period.

Espinosa said Meralco would use as basis the lifeline customers as of February 2020.
