A peaceful settlement was reached between 92 plantation workers from Compostela, Davao de Oro and Sumifru (Philippines) Corp. in a conciliation mediation sanctioned by the Department of Labor and Employment Region XI on June 9.
The workers were duly represented by their counsel in the single entry approach, which is a settlement procedure for all labor issues brought forward by NAMASUFA PP 90 leader Vicente Barrios to DOLE Region XI senior labor employment officer Isidrick Paqueo. The workers also manifested their desire to claim separation pay in lieu of reinstatement and to move forward in mutual agreement with Sumifru.
The claims are based on the ruling of the Supreme Court in the case of Sumifru against Nagkahiusang Mamumuo sa Suyapa Farm which declared the PP 90 workers as regular employees of the said company.
All 92 banana workers voluntary received the separation pay and cash bonuses given out on the spot by Sumifru in the presence of labor officials.
