What makes our beloved grandparents rock? A lot, but most commonly, a rocking chair.
A timeless piece of furniture in many Filipino homes, the rocking chair has become a symbol of our elderly. It helps increase blood flow in the body, easing arthritis and back pain, and helps improve one’s balance—things even non-senior citizens can benefit from.
To celebrate love for our grandparents, while keeping them relaxed and comfortable, Tito Lorete Alcala has made it his personal advocacy to care for the elderly through S.I.L.Y.A.
An acronym of Sa Iyo Lola at Lolo Yantok aming Alay, S.I.L.Y.A.’s programs include providing rocking chairs to airports, malls, hotels, cafes, resorts, museums, libraries, restaurants, and recently to Sunshine Place: Senior Recreation Center.
During Sunshine Place’s fifth anniversary, S.I.L.Y.A. SM matriarch Felicidad Tan-Sy, together with Senior Members Social Club, Inc. president Lizanne Uychaco, received the rocking chairs from Alcala. The event marked a milestone for Sunshine Place and S.I.L.Y.A. as they join hands to thank, to honor,s and to inspire the elderly.
At the Sunshine Place, the chairs promote socialization and creativity, as these were painted on by members of the center’s art classes.
The senior recreation center under the Felicidad Tan Sy Foundation is a venue for adults to live actively, through engaging in recreational classes and age-appropriate physical training programs. It is located at No. 56 Jupiter St., Bel-Air, Makati City.
