Team Philippines will adjust its strategy following a tough 1-4 defeat to Kenya in their second match at the Pink Ladies Week women’s football tournament, held at Emirhan Stadium in Antalya, Turkey.
The match proved challenging for the Philippine National Women’s Football team, as head coach Mark Torcaso reflected on the lessons from the setback.
“This game was an opportunity to implement our strategy, and we’re committed to sticking with it. We’ll continue to work hard, but it’s clear we need to minimize critical errors,” Torcaso commented, stressing the importance of precise execution.
The loss leaves the Filipinas with a 1-0-1 win-draw-loss record, following an impressive 3-0 victory over Jordan earlier in the tournament.
However, Kenya’s Harambee Starlets presented a formidable challenge, with their pace and aggression disrupting the Filipinas’ rhythm. Kenya struck early, with Elizabeth Mutukiza scoring just seven minutes into the game, setting the tone for an intense match.
While the Filipinas managed to regain possession and exert some control, Kenya’s quick transitions continued to pose threats.
Nine minutes before halftime, an unfortunate own goal off a deflection from defender Hali Long extended Kenya’s lead to 2-0, leaving the Filipinas with a steep climb as they headed into the break.
Team Philippines showed resilience in the second half, narrowing the gap to 1-2 after Sarina Bolden scored a penalty in the 67th minute.
But Kenya quickly responded with a long-range strike by substitute Purity Alukwe, restoring their two-goal lead. With just minutes left, Fasila Adhiambo scored a fourth goal, sealing the 4-1 victory for Kenya. Though Bolden appeared to have scored again shortly after, the goal was ruled offside.
“I’m disappointed,” Torcaso said. “The team adapted well to the new system throughout the week, but we struggled to execute it under game pressure.”
Kenya’s disciplined play under head coach Beldine Odemba earned them three points and highlighted their fast, physical style. “Against a team like Kenya, every small error can be costly,” Torcaso added, commending the quality of Kenya’s players.
