The University of the Philippines (UP) and the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission (HRVVMC) on Friday signed the required deed of transfer to construct the planned Martial Law museum.
In a program dubbed “Freedom Rising” held at Quezon Hall in UP Diliman, both parties’ officials signed the document to relocate the Campus Maintenance Office (CMO) to an adjacent lot. This move will make way for the construction of the HRVVMC’s Freedom Memorial Museum on the vacated site.
The museum is intended to house artifacts, feature exhibits related to the Martial Law era under the late President Ferdinand Marcos, and serve as a vital educational resource about our nation’s history.
HRVVMC Executive Director Carmelo Crisanto, CHR Human Rights Policy Centers Office Director Mary Joyce Crisanto, UP President Angelo Jimenez, and UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo Vistan II signed the deed.
According to the UP Administration, the ceremony signals the start of clearing old CMO structures, paving the way for constructing the Freedom Memorial Museum in the 1.4 hectares of campus land along Carlos P. Garcia Avenue.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by human rights victims and survivors of Martial Law, human rights defenders, party-list representatives, and UP officials, faculty, staff, and alumni.
