Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Jr. will step down from his Cabinet post after the official announcement of his senatorial bid in 2025 on Thursday.
Abalos said he will file his resignation as head of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) after attending the ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ alliance convention in Pasay City, where he was introduced as part of the 12-person senatorial lineup of the Marcos administration.
The outgoing DILG chief told reporters he has about a week to complete his work with the department.
“After this, I will wrap up my tasks with the DILG. At least we were able to arrest Alice Guo and Pastor (Apollo) Quiboloy,” Abalos said, referring to two of the high-profile personalities who previously evaded justice.
While there are names circulating as potential replacements, Abalos refrained from sharing details, noting that the final decision rests with the President. Marcos appointed Abalos as DILG Secretary in 2022.
