DOT signs agreement with Sulu to build tourist rest area in Patikul

The Department of Tourism (DOT) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the provincial government of Sulu to ensure the sustainability of the tourism rest area (TRA) project in Patikul.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco led the groundbreaking for a new TRA in Patikul, bringing in economic opportunities and boosting confidence in the local tourism industry.

“Tourism, when managed sustainably, becomes a force that uplifts communities. It brings revenue and opens opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange. This Tourist Rest Area is the physical embodiment of the vision of our President, where tourism drives economic growth and promotes, most importantly, our identity as Filipinos,” she said.

The Patikul TRA will cater to the specific needs of the province by including a prayer room for Muslim visitors. Sulu’s rich cultural heritage, as showcased during the Bangsa Sug Day celebrations, further enhances its tourism appeal.

Frasco expressed confidence in Sulu’s tourism potential and its ability to inspire other provinces.

The new TRA in Sulu serves as a symbol of the government’s dedication to developing tourism in the region, she said.

“What sets Sulu apart is its distinct ability to offer experiences from nowhere else, the deep-rooted traditions passed on through generations, the centuries-old artistry evident in Pis Siyabit weaving, the intricate culinary heritage of the Tausug people. These are what make Sulu an exceptional destination for both local and international tourists,” Frasco said.

The DOT actively promotes Halal tourism, recognizing its potential for both cultural preservation and economic growth.
