Repair of damaged Navotas watergate being hastened

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the local governments of Navotas and Malabon are hastening repairs of the damaged navigational gate of the Malabon-Navotas River.

The concerned government agencies and local government officials have agreed to complete the dredging activity on the waterway by August 2, with start fabrication and installation of necessary structures from August 3, and have the gate fully operational by August 17.

“The repairs will be done during low while the navigational gate is open,” said MMDA chairman Romando Artes.

“However, weather conditions and water current are factors in the immediate repair of the gate. We are keeping our fingers crossed that there will be no weather disturbance or unusual current while repairs are ongoing.”

Navotas City Rep. Tobias Tiangco said a budget of P299 million has been allotted for the rehabilitation of the navigational gate, but will now be used for its repairs following the damage.
