State-run National Power Corp. (NPC) said it switched-on three modular diesel power generation sets of Taganak Diesel Power Plant in Taganak, Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi.
The event coincided with the launching of the distribution line system of Cagayan de Sulu Electric Cooperative, a project facilitated by Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MENRE-BARMM).
“This initiative is anticipated to provide service to 1,000 households, significantly enhancing the island’s energy accessibility,” NPC said in a statement,
Taganak Island is one of the seven islands in the Turtle Islands group in the Sulu Sea close to the maritime borders of Malaysia.
Taganak is renowned for its pristine beaches and ecological significance, and its remote location and relatively undisturbed environment contribute to its status as an important conservation area and nesting site for sea turtles, particularly the endangered green sea and hawksbill turtles.
Tawi-Tawi Governor Yshmael Sali expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Taganak community for the successful implementation of the electrification project.
He said the project would usher in positive change and progress for the residents of Taganak, enhancing their quality of life and creating new avenues for development.
The ceremony was graced by Sali, Minister of MENRE – BARMM Akmad Brahim, Taganak Mayor Faizal Jamalul, NPC vice president Rogel Teves and NPC Small Power Utilities Group department manager Yahcob Darayan.
NPC is mandated under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 to provide electricity to missionary or SPUG areas.
