Las Piñas imposes liquor ban ahead of plebiscite

The local government of Las Piñas has implemented a liquor ban in the city in relation to the June 29 (Saturday) plebiscite, during which residents will vote on a proposed ordinance.

The plebiscite will enable residents to vote on Ordinance No. 1941-23 Series of 2023, which aims to define the boundaries of the city’s 20 barangays.

This ordinance seeks to resolve the issue of confusion regarding barangay boundaries dating back to 1978.

The ordinance is aligned with the cadastral survey conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in March 2015.

To ensure the security of the ballot boxes, the city government has collaborated with the Philippine National Police (PNP) while the Commission on Elections is closely monitoring the entire process.

A gun ban has been in place since May 28 and will continue until July 6, while the liquor ban will be enforced from June 28 to 29.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar has assured the residents of a smooth and secure plebiscite and emphasized the importance of their participation in this democratic process.

According to the Comelec, the plebiscite will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The ordinance highlights that there are barangays with non-contiguous land areas or overlapping boundaries with other barangays.

Furthermore, the ordinance states that there have been disputes arising from confusion in the territorial boundaries of the barangays, particularly since the cadastral mapping in 1980 conflicted with the boundaries as set forth in the Presidential Decrees.

Local and national government agencies – including the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Budget and Management, Philippine Statistics Authority, and Comelec, will have three years starting from the ratification of the ordinance to implement necessary changes in compliance with the new boundaries and jurisdictions of the barangays.
