The Makabayan Bloc voiced strong opposition on Wednesday against what they perceive as the Duterte family’s intentions to broaden their influence in Philippine politics.
House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro gave this reaction after the recent remarks of Vice President Sara Duterte in Davao City, where she disclosed that her father and two brothers are all eyeing a seat in the Senate next year.
Castro, a leading member of the Makabayan Bloc, expressed deep concern over these statements, calling it an alarming display of “bureaucrat capitalism,” where a single family seeks to dominate multiple facets of national politics.
She further criticized the practice of using political positions for personal gain and to obscure past misdeeds, comparing the Dutertes’ ambitions to those of other dynasties.
According to the lawmaker, this development underscores the ongoing power struggle within the ruling elite, warning of the dangers posed by political dynasties consolidating control and stifling democratic processes.
Castro urged the Filipino people to stay vigilant and actively resist efforts by political dynasties to monopolize authority and perpetuate their influence at the cost of democracy and the welfare of the general populace.
