The Iloilo Provincial Government has awarded Santa Barbara P1 million for its winning entry in the “Parada ng Kalayaan,” as part of the 126th Philippine Independence Day Celebration held on June 12 in Manila.
The symbolic check was personally handed over by Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. to Santa Barbara Mayor Dr. Dennis Superficial in a recent ceremony.
The winning float, themed “Cry of Santa Barbara,” captured the essence of the town’s rich historical legacy, impressing judges and earning top honors in the parade.
Mayor Superficial was accompanied by Vice Mayor Isabelo Maquino, Sangguniang Bayan Members Ramon Julius Sodusta, Christine Delgado, Charles Badon, Cris Collada, Atty. Porchia Maquino, Timotheo Padilla, Neil Superficial, SK Federation President Nikka Joan Suganob, and Ex Officio Board Member Ramon Sullano.
Defensor expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the creation and beautification of the float. He specifically praised the efforts of both the provincial government and Santa Barbara officials for their dedication to highlighting the town’s historical significance.
“This victory is not just a win for Santa Barbara, but for the entire province of Iloilo,” said Defensor. “It started with a simple invitation to participate in the parade, and now it has turned into a monumental achievement that showcases our rich cultural heritage.”
Superficial assured Defensor that the P1 million prize would be invested in heritage projects within the town.
The primary focus will be on the redevelopment of the Santa Barbara Church and Convent, a historical landmark considered one of the oldest churches in the country.
“We plan to use this prize to further enhance our town’s historical sites, starting with the Santa Barbara Church,” said Superficial. “We will explore additional opportunities to improve the church’s surroundings to make it even more beautiful and historically significant.”
Defensor also highlighted that the funds provided to Santa Barbara align with the province’s ongoing investment in culture, arts, and tourism.
The successful float, and the subsequent use of the prize money, underscores Iloilo’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich historical and cultural legacy.
The awarded prize, rooted in the province’s cultural initiatives, signifies the importance of investing in the heritage and arts sector to boost tourism and foster a deeper appreciation of local history among Filipinos.
