Rizal’s legacy remains relevant—Imee

Senator Imee Marcos on Tuesday highlighted the enduring significance of Jose Rizal’s legacy in affirming nationhood and collective duty during rites held at the birthplace of the national hero.

The senator drew parallels between the historical fight for independence and the current struggles faced by the nation, emphasizing that the battle for freedom is ongoing.

“The fight for freedom continues to this day, not against colonial oppression but against modern-day threats and everyday challenges,” she said, calling on Filipinos to remain vigilant and proactive in defending the country’s sovereignty and democratic principles.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rizal, a descendant of Dr. José Rizal, emphasized the significance of the festival, saying that “this festival draws inspiration from Dr. José Rizal’s life and works, aiming to honor individuals who selflessly serve their communities, much like the revered national hero.”

The celebrations began last week with a medical and dental mission in the villages of Lingga and Palingon. These services were part of the broader “Calambagong Buhayani Caravan,” a project that underscores the city’s commitment to public health and welfare. The medical mission, featuring consultations by physicians from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and its Brotherhood of Medical Scholars, was a nod to Rizal’s own profession as a doctor. The dental services were funded by the provincial government, ensuring comprehensive care for the residents.

Mayor Rizal highlighted the importance of these initiatives, stating that providing medical services is a fitting tribute to Rizal, who dedicated his life to the well-being of his countrymen. “The medical mission is a fitting way to celebrate Rizal’s birthday given that the national hero was himself a doctor,” he said.

The commemoration culminated today with a series of vibrant activities organized by the city’s Cultural Affairs, Tourism, and Sports Development Department. The day started with floral offerings at the Museo ni Rizal, a symbolic act of remembrance and respect. This was followed by the Buhayani Grand Float Parade and street dancing in the afternoon, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Calamba and the enduring influence of Rizal’s legacy.

The festivities concluded with the “Calambagong Buhayani” concert, a musical celebration that brought together the community in a shared tribute to their beloved hero. The concert featured performances that highlighted themes of patriotism, service, and unity, resonating with the values that Dr. José Rizal championed throughout his life.

Through these commemorative events, Calamba not only honors the memory of Dr. José Rizal but also reinforces the importance of community service and national pride, continuing to inspire future generations to follow in the footsteps of their great national hero.
