In a spectacular celebration of marine biodiversity and conservation, 150 divers participated in the inaugural Kruhay DiveFest held in Northern Antique from June 6-9, 2024.
The Municipality of Pandan hosted the festival aimed at showcasing the underwater beauty of Antique and promote the region as a prime dive tourism destination.
According to Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez, the Department of Tourism (DOT) Western Visayas Regional Director, the event was a significant step in fostering environmental conservation and strengthening the connection between divers and the ocean.
“We created an unforgettable experience that celebrates our deep connection to the ocean and promotes environmental conservation,” Rodriguez said.
The divers explored various sites, including ‘The Wall’ in Tingib/Mag-aba, Pandan, Bulinao, Libertad, Atog Blasut, and Takut Nablag in Malalison Island, Culasi. These locations are renowned for their stunning coral reefs, vibrant marine life, and diverse underwater ecosystems.
Rodriguez emphasized that the event is part of a broader effort to boost dive tourism in the region, which is expected to positively impact the national economy, particularly the tourism sector.
The DOT Dive Committee, chaired by Secretary Christina Frasco, aims to develop new dive sites and further promote the country’s new tourism campaign, “Love the Philippines.”
Beyond diving, participants experienced the natural beauty of local tourist spots such as Igpasungaw Falls in Sebaste and the fish spa in Tibiao.
The event also showcased the rich cultural heritage of Northern Antique, including traditional music, dance, weaving of bags and clothes, and local cuisine.
The success of the event was made possible through the collaboration of DOT Western Visayas, the Local Government Unit of Pandan, Antique, and various government agencies, including the Philippine National Police, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Maritime Industry Authority.
