The Department of Agriculture (DA) has lifted the temporary ban on poultry and bird products from Ohio in the United States.
The ban, implemented in January 2024, addressed concerns about Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreaks in Ohio.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. signed Memorandum Order No. 23 on June 7, 2024, officially lifting the restriction.
The ban covered domestic and wild birds, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen originating from Ohio.
The DA said it based its decision on a report from the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) submitted to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
The report confirmed that Ohio has successfully contained all avian flu cases and reported no new outbreaks since April 2, 2024.
The update from US veterinary authorities allowed the Philippines to resume trade in poultry and bird products from Ohio.
On Saturday, the DA imposed a ban on imports of birds and poultry products from Australia over the alleged bird flu outbreak in Australian states.
It said it would prohibit the imports from Australia of wild and domestic birds, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen.
Australia was the Philippines’ fourth-largest source of imported chicken meat, accounting for 4 percent of its total volume of chicken imports.
