The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is taking steps to reduce the risk of flooding in the National Capital Region (NCR) during the rainy season.
MMDA chairman Romando Artes announced that additional trash traps will be installed in waterways as part of the agency’s flood management efforts.
“With the help of the trash trap, the trash does not reach the pumping station which could cause damage to the facility,” Artes said.
Regular cleaning of pumping stations and waterways is also being conducted to ensure smooth operations during heavy rainfall.
The agency urged the public to participate in promoting proper waste management to minimize garbage and reduce the occurrence of flooding in the metropolis.
Artes said garbage thrown on the streets end up clogging canals, drainage systems, and waterways, causing floods.
He asked the public to stop throwing garbage on the streets to allow rainwaters to flow.
Such trash includes plastic bags, cups and bottles, styrofoam, and leftover food.
